Information for International applicants

Applicants in possession of a pass in the MCAST-BTEC Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care (Health Studies) or the MCAST Advanced Diploma in Health Sciences, together with the MCAST Level 5 Award in Health Sciences shall be considered as having satisfied the general entry requirements.

During the first year of the Course, students are also required to undergo an occupational health assessment so as to ascertain that they are fit for the duties related to their proposed studies. Students who do not fulfil this requirement may be barred from progressing with their studies. Failure to disclose information about a physical or mental health problem that could affect patient safety is considered to be a serious breach of the University Suitability to Practise Regulations.

Requires the submission of a Police Certificate of Conduct.

The course will provide you with a three-year programme of study in both the theory and practice of mental health nursing, allowing you to function as fully accredited members of the psychiatric multi-disciplinary team. The course has been developed to meet the nursing needs of the increasing population of people with mental health problems. As a graduate, you will be prepared to become dynamic, reflective and highly skilled professionals able to work as fully integrated members of the psychiatric multi-disciplinary team. Your main focus as a mental health nursing's is to cultivate the responsibility that comes with a profession that centres around the well-being of people. We also offer opportunities for personal growth, interpersonal skills development and the foundations of evidence-based interventions to enable you to do so as self-directed practitioners. We also encourage you to participate in the Erasmus+ mobility programme for a multicultural and diverse learning experience.

Communication and Academic Skills Programme

The communication and academic skills programme complements students’ main course of study. It introduces them to writing and presenting as situated within academic contexts sensitive to specific disciplines and develops their competences for future careers.

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Undergraduate Awards, 2019 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of Bachelor of Science (Honours) - B.Sc. (Hons) - under the auspices of the Faculty of Health Sciences.

The course will equip you with:

  • the knowledge and skills to work as a safe and competent psychiatric nurse.
  • the opportunities to work as an equal member of the multi-disciplinary psychiatric team.
  • the intellectual development to deal with the complexity of integrating the theoretical knowledge into clinical practice.
  • the personal skills needed to perform effectively and efficiently in diverse Mental health care settings.

    On successful completion of the programme, you would be eligible for employment as a first level registered psychiatric nurse in Malta and in several other EU member states. Nurses are nowadays expected to continue to develop on a personal and professional level, through lifelong learning. Post-registration educational opportunities for professional development are also available, such as specialising programmes, Masters graduate programmes, and EU exchange activities.

    As a graduate psychiatric nurse, you will be employable in a variety of health care settings, such as the community and specialist care setting, and engage in a variety of roles, such as management and policy development, research and the psychiatric nursing development unit. Employment opportunities for this professional group are very good.
